Monday, July 31st, 2006

None of that … ya cant teach an… well you know what I mean!

My mom is a technology wonder… (no really… I wonder!)

She was so happy to learn how to surf the web with a tablet PC!

She did just great… and ended up checking family blogs
a few times throughout the week! It is so much more fun with DSL

And we used the tablet twice in the week
to “Google talk” with the audio chat with Kim in China.

I have an updated links listing of Northland associated people or organizations that I use. I will be updating this list on a regular basis so if you have anyone to include on this list email me the information and I will include them on one of my editing sessions.

This list allows me to combine many Web Blogs (Xanga’s, Google Blogger, WordPress, MySpace etc and Personal web domains) on one resource.

I hope you find this tool useful to stay in touch with friends of Northland and to encourage each other in the Lord.

Irony…and my “little black book” (storage 101)

Monday, July 3rd, 2006

Well anyone who knows me at all… the title of this post has already caught their attention.

What does a intensely single 45/46 year old man know of a “little black book”…well…not much…but read on anyway…it gets worse! My loving and supportive family a few years ago presented me with a book entitled “Everything I know about women” (with my name as the author gilded on the front cover).

Yes you’ve seen them…you open up the book and find all the pages blank!
While this could irritate some people…I could only receive the “gift” and acknowledge the truth of those pages.

Pages!!!
Speaking of pages… (bear with me now…this next part gets confusing…but I will “talk” you through it).

A byte in computer jargon can hold one character of data …and 1,024 bytes is about half of a double-spaced typewritten page. Another way of looking at it is… that a floppy disk holds 1,048,567 bytes or 768 pages of typed text. Since know one uses floppy disks (or shouldn’t) what does that translate to in gigabytes (today’s hard disk sizes). Well 1 gigabyte is approximately 786,432 pages of text… and since 500 sheets of paper equals approximately 2 inches…a gigabyte would represent a stack of paper 262 feet high. Well my “little black book” is 131,000 feet tall… What do you think of that!

No…as you already guess it… I am not talking about a “little black book” that contains all the names and phone numbers of all the women that I am pursuing (that could be written on the corner of a small post-it note).

If I haven’t lost you by now…and you want to (as Paul Harvey would say “hear the rest of the story”) click here and (more…)

Computers computers…COMPUTERS

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

I enjoy computers in moderation… but 42 is a lot of computers to set up at one time. (link to their specs’s post)

But having said that… I am SO VERY THANKFUL for these new additions to the Northland fleet!

As of today (the 29th) we have all but 8 systems unpacked and powered up and running.
Now we still have to get the software installed properly and the units they are replacing get deployed throughout the campus.
(basically the new computers end up in the classroom/lab and then the oldest systems throughout campus gets replaced)

And of course all those unpacked computers
produce a lot of trash! What a mess!!

Macromedia Studio 8… Maybe or maybe not… Time will tell!
Macromedia Studio 8 I am in the process of learning web programming, web site building and management.

This is part of my on-going process of furthering my knowledge base in the vast world of technology.

Stay tuned to see how I do throughout this summer.

By the way… lest anyone think I just inherited a large sum of money… I did not pay anywhere near “list price” for this software!
We have a software vendor that gives us large academic/non-profit discounts on software packages such as this.

Dreamweaver 8
Flash Professional 8
Fireworks 8
Contribute 3
FlashPaper 2
